Prayer on the Festival of Light. (Ḥanukkah)[2] Ḥanukkah, the Festival of the Dedication of the Temple, occurs on the evening of the 24th of Kislev in commemoration of the heroic battle of the Maccabees whereby Israel was freed from the heavy yoke and the Temple was cleansed of idolatry and rededicated. It is celebrated for eight days by lighting lights. A work prohibition does not take place, however. |

When the cruel hand of Antiochus raised it against your people, oppressed and maltreated them; when in madness he wanted to force them to renounce our sublime faith, to turn our pure worship of God into idolatry, when he profaned the temple of God, desecrated the holy of holies, you called forth from among them mighty, glorious fighters and champions of justice, and gave victory and triumph to the noble sons of the Maccabees at the head of the little band. “Then our fathers came to your temple, purified the sanctuary which the barbarians had profaned, kindled the lights in the holy place, and consecrated that day to the praising ‘Hoshia Na’ for all time.” (Cf. 1 Maccabees 4:36-61; end of Megilat Antiokhus) |

In the glimmer of these lights here we see reflected back to us that time when the most devoted trust, the most childlike love for you, you eternally Exalted one, moved again into the despondent, discouraged heart of your people; when your sanctified religion inspired minds anew, and glowed through them in its heavenly power and purity, in its eternal splendor and nobility. |
Mögen diese kleinen Lichter, die das Andenken jener großen Epoche uns heraufrufen, auch in unserem Herzen die heiligsten Gefühle der Gottesfurcht, der Liebe und des Vertrauens zu dir, Allvater, immer von Neuem entzünden und beleben, damit wir in den Tagen des Unglücks und des Trübsals nie entmuthigt und verzagt werden, und wenn deine göttliche Hand uns eine schwere Prüfung auferlegt, fromm und ergeben deinen Willen ehren, geduldig das Auferlegte tragen und niemals verzweifelnd wähnen: „Für uns ist keine Hilfe bei Gott.“ – Du legst die Last auf und schickest das Heil, du wandelst Finsterniß in Licht und Trauer in Freude. May these tiny lights, which recall the memory of that great era to us, also kindle and revive ever anew in our hearts the holiest feelings of fear of God, of love and trust in you, All-Father, so that in the days of calamity and tribulation we may never become discouraged and despondent, and when your divine hand imposes a severe trial upon us, we may piously and devotedly honor your will, patiently bearing what is imposed and never despairing [by saying]: “For us there is no help with God.” (Cf. Psalms 3:2-3) — You lay down the burden and send salvation; you turn darkness into light and sorrow into joy. May you make our hearts strong and vigorous, so that we may always prove ourselves through self-sacrificing devotion and holy perseverance to you and your divine word as courageous fighters and defenders of your divine commandments. This is “Gebet am Lichtfeste” by Fanny Neuda from her collection of teḥinot, Stunden der Andacht (1855/58). In the 1855 edition, it can be found on pages 68-69. In the Judeo-German (vaybertaytsh/mashkit) edition (1864), on pages 88-89.
