חִבַּרְתִּי אֶת הַבְּרָכָה הַזּוֹ כְּשֶׁעָבַרְתִּי פַּעַם לְיַד קוֹיוֹטִי דָּרוּס, סְבִיב הַגּוּפָה הָיוּ עַקְעַקִּים וְעוֹרְבִים שֶׁעָסְקוּ בַּאֲכִילַת הַבָּשָׂר שֶׁלּוֹ זֶה הָיָה רֶגַע לָשִׂים לֵב אֵלָיו, לְקַדֵּשׁ וּלְהַעֲנִיק לוֹ בְּרָכָה. אוּלַי זוֹ הַדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁלִּי לְהִכָּנֵס וְלִהְיוֹת חֵלֶק, לִהְיוֹת בְּשִׂיחָה אַתֶּם.
I composed this short blessing when passing by a dead coyote once. Crows and Magpies were congregating around the corpse and I felt this was a moment to notice, sanctify and bless. It was my way of connecting with all of them, dead and alive.

Who returns the Spirit-Wind.

This blessing for encountering the corpse of a dead animal was composed by Rabbi Gila Caine in advance of Alef b’Elul (Rosh ha-Shanah la-Behemah) 5785.
