The Plea of the Rooster from the tenth gate of Sefer Taḥkemoni by Yehudah al-Harizi (ca. early 13th c.)

Note: “The CAUSE” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.” This translation also uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.

The teacher said:
And I saw in the villager’s house a rooster, long of wing,[1] Ezekiel 17:3
large, tender and choice, fat and moist.
And I desired to eat it,
For all night it had kept me awake from sleep with its sound.
And I said to the villager, “You have done great good for us,
And to extend thanks to you is necessary for us.
But I am sick, and my heart is angered and vexed,
and doctors commanded me lest I eat flesh.
And I desire to eat the flesh of this rooster.”
The villager said to me, “If you desire my son’s flesh,
my eye will not have mercy on him.[2] Ezekiel 16:5 ”
And the villager hurried, he and his wife,
after the rooster; he grabbed it,
And the rooster fled in sorrow and protestation,
from roof to roof and from corner to corner.
And when the villager was tired
and untranquil,
he chased after his rooster,
and saw that he could not get it.[3] Genesis 32:26
He called the lads of his house to help him,
and the lads chased after it
in joy and singing.[4] Genesis 31:27
And one lad caught it
grabbing its leg,
but the rooster in great bitterness bit him
until he left it.
And the rooster fled and escaped from them all
and went to the top of the ladder
and gave praise and laudation to the Master of the Universe
on the day the Cause saved it from all his enemies’ hand.[5] II Samuel 22:1
After that it went up to the roof of the house of prayer,
where there was a large community,
and a tumultuous sound.
And it raised its voice in song,
and said, “Blessed are You, Cause, who gives the cockerel understanding!”[6] Bavli Berakhot 60b.5. The blessing upon, literally, hearing the call of the rooster in the morning (כִּי שָׁמַע קוֹל תַּרְנְגוֹלָא), whereupon one is awakened.
And all the people gathered around it
to hear its speech.
And it answered and said to them, “Hear me, pursuers of justice,[7] Isaiah 51:1  praiseworthy men,
coming to extend prayer
to the One of Awesome Acts,
and to spill hearts
to the Dweller in Clouds,
and to lift their palms
to the Deity in Heaven.[8] Lamentations 3:41
What benefit are prayers
as your souls are filthy with sinful blood?
And why increase petitions
as you spill innocent and impoverished blood?
And how would you think of praying
as every day you lurk to kill the pure!
Bring no more vain grain-offerings,[9] Isaiah 1:13  and come no more to the Deity’s House;
your hands are full of blood![10] Isaiah 1:15
Your prayers are a mockery,
not desired.
And by it your iniquity will not be atoned,
For it is a grain-offering of remembrance, reminding of iniquity.”[11] Numbers 5:15
And the people were awed at its rebuke,
And each man asked his brother about the occurrence that had occurred to him.

And it answered and said to them,
“To you, men, I call,[12] Proverbs 8:4
Those turning back battle to the gate.[13] Isaiah 28:6
Is there no reverence of the Cause on your faces?
If there is no righteous judgment among you,
and if you betray all who come under your roof’s shade,
who will trust in your love?
And if you do harm to your covenant partners,
who else will have faith in you?
Is it nothing in your eyes
to betray loved ones,
and to repay good with evil?
Isn’t it so that since the day I came under your roof’s shade
I have served you with all my strength?
and every night I would awake your sleepers
to pray to your God,
and every day I would sing before you,
to cheer your hearts!
And I increased offspring in your shade,
making sons and daughters to sweeten your palates with their taste!
But you, your thoughts are to do wrong to me,
and all your desires are to kill me!
You have been rebellious against the Cause since the day I first knew you![14] Deuteronomy 9:24
And your thoughts to kill and eat me;
Lo, while I have lived with you you have been rebellious, so too after my death![15] Deuteronomy 31:27
I swear to you, what fault have you found in me[16] Jeremiah 2:5  all my days and years?
Here I am! Testify against me before the Cause![17] I Samuel 12:3
Lo, you all have looked,[18] Job 27:12
and my deeds you have seen,
that none of my labor in my house
is for anything by my prayer and song!
And my work is for nothing but to beg for my life,
and to make music to the Deity when I sit down and get up,[19] Psalms 139:2
and to sing in my night and day;
daily the Cause commands Their mercy and nightly Their song is with me![20] Psalms 42:9
And now that I am old,
and in your work I am aged,
and my days and years have passed,
and the days of my old age have arrived,
you pay me back evil for good,[21] Psalms 35:12
reward love with hate!
And you seek to separate me from my children,
from my wives’ lap divorce me,
to leave my daughters chained orphans,
and my wives widows.
And if you would find benefit, I would be silent
and would seek no violence of you.
But my flesh is harder than flint,
unbefitting a fire-offering.[22] Leviticus 22:27
And my eye is dimmed and my vigor is faded,[23] Deuteronomy 34:7
and my strength is dry as a potsherd,[24] Psalms 22:16
and my bones are made like iron
from the length of my years and many days.
And my smell is rancid,[25] Jeremiah 48:11
and my flesh is tough,
and my taste is bitter,[26] Exodus 15:22
and my pieces are hard to eat
for they are bitter,
and disgusting soup their vessels.[27] Isaiah 65:4
And my grinders are null,
and my peepers are dark,[28] Ecclesiastes 12:3
and no flesh is left in my pinions,
nor fat in my kidneys.
Like water I am spilled out, my bones all separated.[29] Psalms 22:15
If a sick man eats me, he will die sick in his day,
he will bear his iniquity on his shoulder,
and his guilt will not be atoned.
If a healthy man eats me, he will gain no strength in me,
nor find rest.
And now, why have you repaid me with this payback,[30] II Samuel 19:37
leaving your children such slander?
Have I not for you from my own children a replacement,
a pleasant gift?
For they are sweet and pure
and choice and tender
and each one of them has many praises
and soft pieces,
and preparations like incense
and pinions full of fat
and marrow-bones.[31] Job 21:24
And my daughters are all fat and sweet,
pleasant to every tongue and desireable to the heart,
and their taste is sweet to the mouth,
and if a sick man eats them he will be healed,
and need no doctor.
And of me the Torah says at the time
“Send out, send out the mother, and take the children for yourself!’[32] Deuteronomy 22:7 ”

This is a portion of the tenth gate from ספר תחכמוני Sefer Taḥkemoni of Yehudah Al-Harizi (ca. 1179-1235), narrated by The Farmer. The transcription and English translation was made by Isaac Gantwerk Mayer. Isaac adds, “While Israel Davidson in Parody in Jewish Literature (1907) considered this satire, the imagery of a rooster so desperate not to be killed and eaten that he is begging humans to kill and eat his children instead is horrifying.” For its possible use as a reading for Rosh haShanah la-Behemah, exposing a compassionate anti-predatory tradition within Judaism, I share this here. –Aharon Varady
