On 29 October 1896, Joseph Ezekiel Rajpurkar offered this prayer in Hebrew with translations in Marathi and English, on behalf of the congregation of Shaar haRaḥamim — the Gates of Prayer Synagogue (Bombay/Mumbai), on a civic day of distress appointed in the event of an epidemic of bubonic plague in the city.

Merciful God! we are ashamed to raise our eyes, and we are confounded to spread our hands towards Thee and ask mercy from Thee because our sins overwhelm us, and our iniquities have risen up to heaven. Severe judgment has been pronounced against us, a pestilence is spread among us, and the plague is increasing, because, O Lord, our God, Thy wrath is kindled and Thy anger is come upon us. Terrors of death have fallen upon us; fear and trembling have come upon us. We have therefore come this day to pour our supplications before Thy footstool and to rouse Thy mercy upon all who wait for Thy grace. |
हे दयासागरा! तुजकडे वर आमची दृष्टी लावायास, तुजकडे आमचे हात पसरायास आणि तुजपासून दया मागायास आह्यांस लज्जा वाटते, व आम्ही विस्मित होतों, कारण आमचे अपराध आमच्या डोक्यावर गेले आहेत आणि आमचे अतिकम आकाञझापयत वाढले आहेत. आणि त्यामुळे तुझा कठोर न्याय आह्यावर आला आहे, पीडा पसरली आहे आणि पटकी वाढत चालली आहे. कारण हे परमेश्वरा आमच्या देवा, तुझा राग चेतला आहे आणि तुझा क्षेम आम्हांवर आला आहे, मरणाची भये आह्यांवर पडलीं आहेत; भय व कांपर्णे आह्यास लागलें आहे. यास्तव आह्मी आज तुझ्या पादातनापुढें विनंती करण्यास व तुझया दयेची वाट पाहणारांकरितां तुझ्या दयेस जागत करण्यास आलो आहे. |
אָב הָרַחְמָן הִתְמַלֵּא רַחֲמִים עָלֵינוּ וְקַבֵּל בְּרָצוֹן אֶת תְּפִלְַּתֵנוּ אַל תִּפֶן לְרִשְׁעֵינוּ וְאַל תִּתְעַלָּם מִבַּקָּשָׁתֵנוּ וַעֲנֵינוּ הַיּוֹם כְּמוֹ שְׁעָנִית לְמֹשֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו סָלַחְתִּי כִּדְבָּרֶיךָ כֵּן סְלַח לָנוּ אָבִינוּ וּמְחוֹל לָנוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ וְהָסֵר מִמְּנוּ וּמִכׇּל עַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמִכׇּל יוֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ הַזֹאת דֶּבֶר וְרָעָב וְיָגוֹן וּמַגֵּפָה וְכֹל גְּזֵירוֹת קָשׁוֹת וְרָעוֹת׃ וּבְצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּסְתִּירֵנוּ וְאַל תִּתֵּן הַמַּשְׁחִית לָבֹא אֶל בָּתֵּינוּ׃ |
Merciful Father! be gracious unto us; accept our prayer with pleasure; turn not towards our wickedness, and hide not Thyself from our entreaties. Answer our prayer this day as Thou didst answer Thy servant Moses; and, as Thou didst say unto him, “I have pardoned according to thy word,” so forgive us, O our Father, and pardon us, O our King; and remove pestilence, famine, misery, plague, and all severe and evil decrees from us, from all Thy people Israel, and from all the inhabitants of this country. Shelter us under the shadow of Thy wings, and suffer not destruction to enter our houses. |
हे दयाळु बापा, तुला आमची दया येऊं दे आणि प्रसन्रतेने आमची प्राथना मान्य कर, आमच्या दु्टाईकडे वळूं नक्रो आणि आमच्या बिनंतीपासून लपून राहूं नको. आणि जसें तूं आपला सेवक मोशे यास उत्तर दिलंस आणि त्यास ह्यणालास का तुझ्या ह्मणण्याप्रमाणे म्यां क्षमा केली आहे; तसें आह्यांस उत्तर दे आणि हे बापा, आह्यास क्षमा कर, आणि हे आमच्या राजा! आह्यांस माफी दे. आणि आम्हांवरून तुझया रवै इ्नाएळ लोकांवरून आणि ह्या देशांतील सर्व राहणाऱ्यांवरून मरी, दुष्काळ, दुःख, पटकी आणि रवै कठोर ब वाईट निवाडे दूर कर, तुझ्या पंखाच्या छयिखालीं आम्हांस आश्रय दे, आणि आमच्या घराकडे कोणतीही पीडा येऊं देऊं नका. |

O Creator of the World! we trust in Thy mercy and depend upon Thy grace; because it is Thy way to withhold Thy anger, and Thy custom to have mercy on Thy creatures. Answer now our supplication, and regard our prayer like the sweet incense burnt by Aaron and his sons, the priests. Withhold this plague from us, from all Thy people Israel, and from all who wait for Thy salvation. Have compassion upon those who have already been smitten by, and are suffering from, the plague, because Thou art a kind and merciful God. Cure us and we shall be cured; save us and we shall be saved, for Thou art our praise. Be Thou near unto our cries; and answer us before we cry unto Thee, as it is said, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer, and while they are yet speaking, I will hear”; because we have no faithful and merciful Physician but Thee; neither have we any one to redeem us, to deliver us, to answer us, and to have compassion on us, in all times of trouble and distress, besides Thee. If Thou showest not this mercy unto us for our sake, show it at least for Thy own sake; and save us speedily for Thy name’s sake. Amen. May such be His will. |
हे जगक्तर्त्या, पाहा आम्ही तुझ्या कृपेवर भरंवसा ठेविला आहे आणि तुझ्या मोठ्या दयेवर आज्ञा ठेविली आहे, कारण राग आवरण्याचा तुझा मार्गच आहे आणि तुझ्या प्राणिमात्रांवर दया करण्याची तुझी चाङच आहे. तर आमच्या विनंतीचे उत्तर दे आणे आहारोनवत्याचे पुत्र जे याजक यांनीं तुजपुढें दाखदिलेल्या सुगंधाप्रमाणें आमची प्रार्थना समजून ही पटकी आह्यांवरून, तुझ्या इस्राएल लोकांवरून, व तुझ्या तारणाची आशा करणारांवरून बंद कर. लागलल्यांचा व पीडा झालेल्यांची करुणा कर. कारण तुं दयाळू व कृपाळू देव आहस, ह परमश्वरा, आह्यांस निरोगी कर म्हणजे आम्ही निरोगी होऊं. आह्यास तार ह्मणजे आह्मी तरू. कारण तूं आमचा स्तुतिपात्र आहेस, आमची आरोळी ऐकण्यासाठी तूं जवळ ऐस आणि “असे होईल कीं त्यांनीं हाक मारल्यापूर्वा मा उत्तर देईन, ते बोलतांच मी ऐकेन” या शास्त्रांत हृटलेल्या वाक्याप्रमाणे आम्हास उत्तर दे. कारण आम्हांस विश्वासू व दयाळू वेद्य तुजवांचून कोणी नाह| आणि संकटाच्या व विपत्तीच्या समयी उद्धरणारा, सोडविणारा, उत्तर दणाराव दया करणारा तुजक्चिवाय कोणी नाही. आणि जर तूं ही दया आम्हाक्रारता करीत नसलास तर तूं आपणाकरितां तरी कर. आगि तूं आपल्या नामाकरितां आह्यास लवकर तार, आमेन. अशी त्याची प्रस्ता होवो. |
