The Six Additional Blessings for a 24-Blessing ‘Amidah for Declared Fast Days, according to Vat. Ross. 499 fol. 57v–62r (1446)

The Italian rite, unique among Jewish rites, has preserved up until very recently the custom recorded in the Talmud, Masekhet Tagnanith, for communally declared fast days. In this rite, sometimes referred to as the Twenty-Four Blessings, six more blessings are added to the liturgy — the Zikhronot and Shofrot portions more commonly recited on Rosh haShanah, and four different psalms, all interspaced with a poetic litany on behalf of the ancestors’ merit and shofar blasts. I had previously transcribed the version of this liturgy as found in the Goldschmidt Mahzor Roma. But this version below is different, including a more complex variation in the ancestors’ merit passages, as well as relevant Biblical passages for each one. It is found in Vat. Ross. 499, a 1446 manuscript of the Italian rite with a lot of very interesting liturgical content in it.

This is the prayer for fast days
that the great sages compiled
from the words of the rabbis for a blessing[1] Probably intended to be “the rabbis of blessed memory” but the zayin is missing from the abbreviation  and from the Talmud,
and it is good for any time of stress,
may it not come upon the community,
amen!
Prayer for a Fast Day
When the prayer-leader reaches “Merciful One, who increases forgiveness,”[2] The conclusion of the sixth blessing, also known as birkat seliḥah. Seliḥot piyyuṭim were originally inserted into this blessing, and in western Ashkenazi rites on fast days it still is. This is the origin of the name!
say seliḥot and petitions, increasing according to time and according to one’s own knowledge.
The rule is to do it like other fast days, like the order written in this cycle.
And when reaching “Redeemer of Israel[3] The conclusion of the seventh blessing. The ‘Aqedah passage is inserted into the seventh blessing instead of having its own blessing.  lengthen therein,
and say it up to “And redeem us, our Sovereign, quickly, for Your name’s sake,”
and before saying the conclusion say —
May the One who answered Abraham our father on Mt. Moriah
answer us
and hear the sound of our shouts
and redeem us from all stresses!
And continue:
[4] This first line, also found at the end of the blessing, is recorded in a later hand (sloppy, cursive, and unvocalized). Perhaps it was recited by the community before the prayer leader continues with the ‘Aqedah. The community reciting the Mi she-Anah passages prior to the prayer leader is found in other maḥzorim.
Our God and God of our ancestors,
remember us with good memory before You,
and recall us with a recollection of salvation and compassion
from the highest heavens of old,
and remember for us, Cause our God,
the covenant and mercy and oath
that You swore to Abraham our father on Mt. Moriah,
and let the binding be visible before You,
that Abraham our father bound his son Isaac
on the back of the altar, as written:
And Isaac said to Abraham his father, quote: “Dad?”
And he said, “I’m here, son.”
And he said, “Here’s the kindling and the wood,
but where’s the lamb for the offering?”
And Abraham said:
God will see to the lamb for the offering – my son.”
And the two of them walked together. (Genesis 22:7–8)
And they came to the place that God had told him,
and there Abraham built an altar
and arranged the wood
and bound Isaac his son
and set him on the altar above the wood.
And Abraham stretched his hand
and took up the cleaver to slaughter his son. (Genesis 22:9–10)
And a messenger of the Cause called to him from heaven and said,
“Abraham! Abraham!”
And he said: “I’m here!”
And he said: “Don’t raise your hand against the lad,
nor do anything to him,
for now I know that you are a God-fearer,
and did not withhold your son, your only one, from Me.” (Genesis 22:11–12)
And Abraham raised his eyes and saw:
hey, a ram, back there, caught in the brush by its horns.
And Abraham went and took the ram
and offered it up as an offering instead of his son.
And Abraham called that place by the name “The Cause will see,”
where today it is said, on the mountain of the Cause is vision. (Genesis 22:13–14)

Thus may Your compassion overpower Your anger
and Your compassion roll over Your attributes,
and be led with Your children with the attribute of mercy,
and enter them as beyond the letter of the law.
And in Your great goodness
turn back Your raging anger
from Your city
and from Your land
and from Your inheritance
and from Your people Israel.

And the community raises one or two people,
experts in horn-blowing, sin-fearing,
either of the seed of Aaron or the seed of holy people.
And the sexton of the community,
that is the beadle of the community, says,
“Blow, children of Aaron, blow!”
or “Blast, children of Aaron, blast!” if they are priests blowing.
If they are non-priests, they say “Blow, children of the holy, blow!” —

And when the heavens are closed
and there is no precipitation,
for they sinned against You,
and they pray to this place
and acknowledge Your name,
and return from their sin,
You will answer them.
As for You, hear [in] heaven
and forgive the sin of Your servants and Your people Israel,
for You taught them the good path they should walk,
and give them rain on Your land
that You gave Your people as an inheritance.
If famine is in the land, plague,
if there is blight, rot, locust, grasshoper,
if it is that their enemy is beseiging them in the land of their gates,
all injury and all sickness —
any prayer and any petition that is of any person,
of all Your people Israel
(for each person knows their heart’s injury)
and spreads their palms to this house,
as for You, You will hear [in] heaven, Your enthroned abode,
and forgive, and act, and give
each person according to their ways —
as You know their heart, for as for You,
You alone know the heart of all mortal humans.
That they may revere You all the days
that they live on the face of the land
that You gave our ancestors. (I Kings 8:35–40)

After this blessing, add six more blessings between “Redeemer” and “Healer,”[5] The seventh and eighth blessings of a weekday ‘amidah. Find B. Taanit 13b
and for the first blessing say the verses of remembrance per the order of the New Year,
and begin:

You remember the universe’s works,
and account for all creatures of yore.
Before You all secrets are revealed,
and many hidden things since creation.
For there is no forgetting before Your honored throne,
nor is there hiding from before Your eyes.
You remember all acts,
and no creature could be deceiving before You. —

Content is the person who does not forget You,
the mortal who takes courage in You.
For all who seek You will never be disgraced,
nor will You ever destroy all who hope in You.
So too, Noaḥ in love You remembered,
accounting for him in an accounting of salvation and compasssion,
when You brought the floodwaters to destroy all
on account of the evil of their deeds.
Thus his memory came before You, Cause our God,
to multiply his seed like the dust of the earth
and his descendants like the sand of the sea.

and they did not come one near another all night. (Exodus 14:18–20)

And it was the morning watch,

And They locked their chariots’ wheels

upon Your holy people to speak with them.
From heaven You made Your voice heard

And so too all the world shakes before You,

In Your revealing Yourself, o Sovereign, upon Mt. Sinai,
to teach Your people teaching and commandments,
You made them hear the glory of Your voice
and words of Your holiness from flames of fire.
In thunder and lightning You were revealed upon them,
and in the sound of the shofar You were shown upon them.

And the ark of the Cause went around
and orbited the city one time,
and they went to the camp and stayed in the camp.
And Joshua woke up early in the morning
and the priests took up the ark of the Cause.
And seven priests carrying seven ram’s horn shofars
before the ark of the Cause were going,
going and blasting on the shofars,
and the vanguard going before them,
and the rearguard after the ark of the Cause,
going and blasting with shofars.
And they encircled the city on the second day one time,
and returned to the camp;
thus they did six days. (Joshua 6:11–6:14)

And it was on the seventh day,
and they got up early at sunrise
and encircled the city per the rule:
seven times specifically on that day,
they encircled the city seven times. (Joshua 6:15)

And on the seventh time the priests blew on the shofars,
and Joshua said to the people,
“Raise a blast, because the Cause has given you the city!
And the city is to be condemned,
it and all that is in it is the Cause’s.
Only Raḥaḇ the whore will live,
and those that are with her in her house,
for she hid the messengers who we sent.
And you certainly must keep this condemnation,
lest you be condemned!
And if you take from what is condemned
you will make the camp of Israel condemnation,
and disturb it.
And all silver and gold and bronze and iron tools
are holy to the Cause;
they will go to the Cause’s treasury.” (Joshua 6:16–6:19)

And the people raised a blast and blew the shofars,

each straight ahead,

To the Cause in the strife I faced,
I called and They answered.
Cause, redeem my being from lying lips,
from a slippery tongue!
What can you get,
what can you gain,
o slippery tongue?
Warrior’s arrows, sharpened,
hot coals of bramble.
Woe is me, for I dwell in Meshekh,
that I live with the nomads’ tents!
So long I myself have lived here,
with those who hate peace.
I am “Peace!” but as I speak,
they are for war. (Psalms 120:2-7)

And they gathered towards Miẓpah,

But You threw me to the abyss, in the heart of the seas,
and the currents surrounded me,
all Your breakers and waves oper me passed.
And I had been saying to myself,
‘I am driven away from before Your eyes,
lo, would I again gaze upon Your holy Palace?’
Waters encompassed me to the neck,
the depths surrounded me,
the seaweed knotted over my head.
To the mountains’ bases I sunk,
the earth’s bars over me forever —
but You brought my life from the Pit, Cause my God.
As my soul was turning away, the Cause I remembered,
and my prayer came to You, to Your holy Palace.
Those keeping fallacious lies abandon their mercy.
But as for me, with a sound of thanksgiving I should offer to You,

Salvation is the Cause’s!” (Jonah 2:2–10)

from the sound of my groaning
my bones stick to my skin.
I am like the desert owl,
the little-owl in the ruins.
Insomniac, I am like a bird alone on a roof. (Psalms 102:4-8)

All day my enemies abuse me,
boasters swear at me.
For ash like bread I have eaten,
and my drink I mixed with tears,
from Your rage and anger,
as You took me and cast me off.
My days like a long shadow,
I dry up like grass.
But You, Cause, are forever enthroned,
and Your memory is from age to age. (Psalms 102:9-13)

You will rise, have compassion on Ẓíōn,
for it is time to grace her, for the time has come!
For Your servants desire its stones
and love its dust.
And the nations will revere the Cause’s name,
and all the earth’s kings Your glory.
For the Cause built Ẓíōn,
appearing in Their glory.
They have turned to the prayer of the stripped-bare,
and have not ignored their prayer. (Psalms 102:14-18)

Let this be written for a later age,
that a people to be created may praise Yah.
For They gaze down from Their holy heights,
from heaven to earth They look,
to hear the groan of the bound,
to release those doomed to death,
to tell in Ẓíōn the name of the Cause,
and Their praise in Jerusalem,
when the peoples are gathered together,
and the kingdoms to serve the Cause. (Psalms 102:19-23)

They afflicted my strength on the way, shortened my days.
I say, “My Deity, do not take me out halfway through my days,
You whose years are ages upon ages!”
Of old You founded the earth,
Your handiwork is heaven.
They will perish,
but You, You will remain,
but everything will wear out like a garment,
like clothing You will replace them
and they will be replaced.
But You and Your years will not cease.
May Your servants’ children abide,
and their seed endure before You. (Psalms 102:24-29)

Our God and God of our ancestors,

And all Aravnah gave the king, to the king,
and Aravnah said to the king,
The Cause your God desires you.”
And the king said to Aravnah,
“No, I will buy, buy it from you at price,
that I not offer up to the Cause my God worthless offerings!”
And David bought the threshing-floor and the cattle
for fifty shekels of silver.
And David there built an altar to the Cause
and offered up whole-offerings and peace-offerings,
and the Cause heeded the land
and the plague was stopped from upon Israel. (II Samuel 24:23–25)

And it says:
When Your people goes out to war on its foe
on the path that You send them,
and prays to the Cause towards the city that You chose
and the house that I built in Your name,
You will hear [in] heaven their prayers and petitions,
and do justice for them.
And if they sin against You —
for there is no person who does not sin! —
and You are enraged at them and give them over to the enemy,
and their exiles are exiled to the land of the enemy,
whether far or near,
and they turn their heart to the land from where they were exiled,
they will return and plead to You in the land of their exile, quote:
“We sinned, and we did iniquity, we were evil,”
and return to you with all their hearts
and with all their souls. (I Kings 8:44–48)

And they blast:

and after that say:
May the One who answered David and Solomon his son in Jerusalem
answer us and hear the sound of our shouts on this day,
for a Deity who hears shouts are You.
Blessed are You, Cause, who has compassion on the land.
And respond: Amen.

And return to their prayer and say:
Heal us, Cause, that we be healed,
save us that we be saved,
for our praise are You,
and bring complete healing
to all our plagues and to all our sicknesses,
for a Deity healing, compassionate, and faithful[17] The opening of the eighth blessing of the ‘amidah on regular weekdays.  etc.

Notes
1Probably intended to be “the rabbis of blessed memory” but the zayin is missing from the abbreviation
2The conclusion of the sixth blessing, also known as birkat seliḥah. Seliḥot piyyuṭim were originally inserted into this blessing, and in western Ashkenazi rites on fast days it still is. This is the origin of the name!
3The conclusion of the seventh blessing. The ‘Aqedah passage is inserted into the seventh blessing instead of having its own blessing.
4This first line, also found at the end of the blessing, is recorded in a later hand (sloppy, cursive, and unvocalized). Perhaps it was recited by the community before the prayer leader continues with the ‘Aqedah. The community reciting the Mi she-Anah passages prior to the prayer leader is found in other maḥzorim.

6A note to skip the Rosh Hashanah specific lines in the Zikhronot blessing.
