Note: “The CAUSE” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.” This translation also uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.

For in Your great mercies we trust, and upon Your righteousnesses we rely, and for Your forgivenesses we hope, and for Your salvation we await. You are the righteousness-loving Sovereign of old, wiping away Their people’s iniquities and removing the sins of Their reverent, cutting a covenant with the former and fulfilling the vow with the latter. You are the One who came down in the cloud of Your glory upon Mt. Sinai and showed Your good paths to Moses Your servant, and revealed Your pious ways to him, and let him know that You are merciful and compassionate, long-suffering and abounding in kindness and great in goodness, and leading all the world entire in mercy, as it is written: And They said: I Myself will pass My goodness before your face, and I will call in the name of the Cause before you, and I will grace those whom I grace, and have mercy on those whom I have mercy.[1] Exodus 33:19 |

Deity, long-suffering are You, and called the master of mercy, and You showed the path of repentance. Your great mercy and kindness You will remember today and every day for Your beloved seed. Turn to us in mercy, for You are the master of mercy. In petition and prayer we approach Your Face, as You showed the humble (Moses) of old. From Your raging anger turn away, as is written in Your Torah. And in Your wings’ shade let us shelter and lodge, as on the day the Cause descended in a cloud…[2] Exodus 34:5 Wipe away the offense and erase the guilt, as on the day They stood with him there.[3] Exodus 34:5 Heed our cry and hearken from us a word, as on the day They called the name of the Cause.[4] Exodus 34:5 And there it is said: |

Our God and God of our ancestors…[6] This first seliḥah, Ana Hoel, is of uncertain composition. It is found in the Alsace, Nuremberg-Fürth, and Worms seliḥot rites as the first seliḥa of Shaḥarit, and in the Italian-Ashkenaz, Cologne, and Palatinate rites as an intermediate seliḥah of Shaḥarit. It is not used as such in the Swabia-Switzerland or eastern-European rites. |
Accordingly please forgive Your servants, bowed heads coming before You. Glorious One, deliver them from Your hand’s struggle, do heed their speech like Your hearth’s burnt-offerings! |
Espy parents and children with tilted-up necks, votives and petitions increasing to quench rage; zoned to them, recall mercy on the Hebron-interred,[7] The patriarchs have them find life and total forgiveness. |
To what means will our foul mutterings be atoned? Yea, both server and served[8] The high priest and the Yom Kippur offerings have ceased from atoning. Keen and strong One, turn to seal the book; Look upon the covenant and do not breach it! |
Mortified are we to raise our face; now that we abandoned the right path and did straying, setting falsehood as our fortress and sheltering in lies, our iniquities extend to the stratospheric heavens. |
Pleading we have thus codified to turn back Your rage; Confessing private and public matters before You. Quotes of ours pray hear from Your high abode; Regarding us attentively should Your ears be on high. |
Shield for us the covenant and the mercy! Shaddai are You called, great in mercy. Thus, for Your sake, reward us with mercy; that with You is compassion and mercy. |
Deity, Sovereign, seated on a throne of mercy and leading in kindness, forgiving Their people’s iniquities, removing them one by one, increasing pardon for sinners and forgiveness for offenders, doing right with all body and soul rather than repaying them for their evil. |
Deity, You taught us to say the thirteen; remember for us today the covenant of the thirteen, as You made known to the humble (Moses) of old, as it is written: The Cause descended in a cloud and They stood with him there, and They called the name of the Cause. And there it is said: |
And the Cause passed before his face and said: 1 Cause! 2 Cause! 3 Deity, 4 merciful 5 and compassionate, 6 long-suffering 7 and great in kindness 8 and truth, 9 keeping kindness to the thousandth generation, 10 bearing iniquity 11 and offense 12 and sin, 13 and absolving! (Exodus 34:6–7) |
And forgive our iniquities and our sins, and make us Your inheritance! (Exodus 34:9) |

Forgive us, our Parent, for we have sinned; pardon us, our Sovereign, for we have done offense! For You, Master, are a Deity good and forgiving, great in kindness to all who call on You. (Psalms 86:5) |

How gracious You are to answer the sound of those pleading You as they shout; You prepare their heart, Your ear hears all about. |

Tracks of Your compassion are good; do not keep them from us; by Your great mercy be a leader with us. |

You should consider our fasting like a sacrifice, and rescue us and atone for our vice. |
Confessing their sin before You — atone in surety; purify and cleanse them from all their impurity. |

Let those praying petitions before You not be shamed emptyhanded, and hear from the heavens the prayer each man did. |

May You pardon those seeking Your pardon, and cast their sins to the abyss barred in. |

Swerve from Your burning anger and rage, that Your name be known to all on the world stage. |
For on You is forgiveness, the sis of those seeking Your face, Master, forgive this. |
Please account with mercy for Your treasured folk, and do not disgrace or abominate Your poor community’s suffering yoke. |
Choose Jerusalem again, have compassion on Ẓíōn, Master, listen, act without delay, You we rely on! |
Quick, gather Your scattered flock, and account for this vine, Your right hand’s planted stalk. |
Rapidly, please, Compassionate, we hope for salvation; not for our sake, God, but for Your exaltation. |
Shouts of our voice, pray hear! And respond to us in our prayer clear. |
Then return Your Presence to Ẓíōn and to Your people who Your compassion proclaim, for over Your city and Your people is called Your name. |

Cause, in the morning hear our voice, in the morning we plead to You and home.[15] Psalm 5:4, pluralized Our souls are to the Master as those watching for the morning are watching for the morning.[16] Psalms 130:6, pluralized You grant truth to Jacob, mercy to Abraham, as You promised our ancestors in days of old. (Micah 7:20) God’s sacrifices are a contrite spirit, a broken and crushed heart God will not shame. Do good as You desire to Ẓíōn, build Jerusalem’s walls. (Psalms 51:19–20) |

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see our destruction and the city upon which Your name is called; for not by our righteousness do we cast our petitions before You but by Your great mercies. |
Our God and God of our ancestors…[17] ’Aqedah piyyuṭim are always the second-to-last seliḥah in the cycle. This ‘aqedah piyyuṭ, by the thirteenth century R. Mordechai “the Tall” son of Shabbetai, is found in every Eastern European rite, as well as the Italian-Ashkenaz, Cologne, and Palatinate rites, as the ‘aqedah for Shaḥarit. It is not used as such in the Alsace, Swabia-Switzerland, Nuremberg-Fürth, and Worms rites. |
[In the morning][18] In most practices that recite this ‘aqedah piyyuṭ, this opening “in the morning” is not recited for the first verse. My Rescuer, Deity, Rock, Concealer, Shield, and the Horn of my salvation; my Refuge on my day of stress and struggle! I rise early to petition you, great Sovereign, and as for me, to You, Cause, I cry and in the morning.[19] Psalms 88:14 |
In the morning, of the mercy of Abraham, my mighty patriarch, remember, Compassionate One! You chose him and he trusted in You, the first of my believers. Remember his covenant and save me from my impurity, Cause, in the morning hear my voice, in the morning.[20] Psalms 5:4 |
In the morning, reward You would see him earn, speaking to him You tested him, and cut a covenant with him to be his guard. You loved him and desired him and chose him like incense of spices, each morning, in the morning.[21] Exodus 30:7 |
In the morning, dawned its star as You desired to show his great righteousness, and you tried him on the tenth and said to him, “Take your son and do not hesitate, on one of the mountains, and offer him up there as a burnt-offering— the first lamb you will prepare in the morning!”[22] Numbers 28:4 |
In the morning, expressing Your name’s oneness, he heard Your voice and showed his love, and rejoiced with all his heart on Your word to do it. The love made him disregard his rule, and he got up in his joy, and Abraham got up in the morning.[23] Genesis 19:27 |
In the morning, composing their hearts, the two of them went to do Your will, Awesome One — the son took wood and the father took the cleaver to slaughter without redemption. They were called and went wholly and saw Your glory on the third day, while still in the morning.[24] Exodus 19:16 |
In the morning, he girded his loins like a warrior, and rushed to bind his son, and took the cleaver to slaughter him inhumanely, and said, “Today I will offer my burnt-offering and spill the blood of my sacrifice, and it will not lie there until in the morning![25] Exodus 34:25 |
In the morning, aroused was Your compassion on the only son, and it shone upon him,[26] Isaac and the Cause’s angel said to him,[27] Abraham “Let your hand not be sent out! For in Isaac will your seed be called,[28] Genesis 21:12 and his memory for generations will rest for you as guard until in the morning.”[29] Exodus 16:23 |

In the morning, Isaac’s propriety and righteousness will advocate for the people drawing near to You, and his ash will always be seen before You as cleansing them much. Grant them their souls as they ask, for to You they desire in the evening, arriving, and in the morning.[30] Esther 2:14 |
In the morning, hear their voice and atone for their iniquities, that the array of their prayers be like the array of their sacrifices. They took and came in memory of their ancestors’ righteousness, and they brought more donation to Them each morning, in the morning.[31] Exodus 36:3 |
In the morning, turn to us, and may Your mercy be aroused, and sink into the sea’s abyss all our sins that they not be remembered; Rock, pass our sins away from before You, that none of them remain until in the morning.[32] Exodus 12:10 |
Deity, Sovereign, seated on a throne of mercy and leading in kindness, forgiving Their people’s iniquities, removing them one by one, increasing pardon for sinners and forgiveness for offenders, doing right with all body and soul rather than repaying them for their evil. |
