Meditation of the Heart: A Book of Private Devotion for Young and Old (1900) is a collection of teḥinot in English, selected, arranged, and written by Annie Josephine Levi. The introduction was written by the Rabbi Gustav Gottheil. We know very little else about Levi save that she contributed short stories, poems, and essays to periodicals and was active from 1895-1905. La Tefila du Soldat is an abridged bilingual Hebrew-French prayerbook for French-Jewish soldiers prepared in 1939 by Rabbi Maurice Liber, the former interim Chief Rabbi of France under Rabbi Israël Lévi (from 1934-1939). In addition to abridged liturgy, the prayerbook also contains a curated selection of teḥinot in vernacular French, and psalms in French translation. Rabbi Isaie Schwartz, appointed chief rabbi in 1939, wrote the introductory letter to Jewish soldiers at the start of the French section of the siddur. Jewish Science and Health: Textbook of Jewish Science (1925) presents the philosophy and practice of Rabbi Morris Lichtenstein’s “Jewish Science movement” (an uncoordinated response to the then popular Christian Science movement), which he also referred to as “Applied Judaism.” Rabbi Lichtenstein emphasized the efficacy of visualization in the practice of prayer, and lacking that, the use of affirmations.
