🆕 🗐 Lists of “Vows” or Alternate Readings for Simḥat Torah Night

Most communities these days with the practice of reading Torah on Simḥat Torah night read either the first three or the first five ‘aliyot from V-Zot haBerakha, the morning Torah reading from Deuteronomy. However this was not always the case. In many communities throughout eastern Europe, Simḥat Torah night was a time to auction off and read verses of blessing from throughout the entire Torah — called “nedarim” or “vows” in honor of the fact people would pledge money to read them as an aliyah. Many different lists of these verses have come down to us over the years, from as few as three to as many as twenty different readings. Here’s a compilation of ten different lists of “vows,” nine of which were sourced from R. Avraham Yaari’s renowned work “Toldot Ḥag Simḥat Torah” and the tenth of which was submitted by Michael Y. Kopinsky to the “Life in the Fast Lein” Facebook group. Also included are images of the original sources for the ten lists, as well as an original translation of R. Yaari’s passage explaining the custom of the “vows.”

We strongly advise against printing sacred texts and art containing divine names as these copies must be regarded with reverence, complicating their casual treatment and disposal.
If you must dispose of a printed sacred text (one containing Divine Names), please locate the closest genizah (often established by a synagogue) and contact its custodians for further instructions. We also recommend using Morah Yehudis Fishman's Prayer for Adding a Work to the Genizah.

Support this work: The Open Siddur Project is a volunteer-driven, non-profit, non-commercial, non-denominational, non-prescriptive, gratis & libre Open Access archive of contemplative praxes, liturgical readings, and Jewish prayer literature (historic and contemporary, familiar and obscure) composed in every era, region, and language Jews have ever prayed. Our goal is to provide a platform for sharing open-source resources, tools, and content for individuals and communities crafting their own prayerbook (siddur). Through this we hope to empower personal autonomy, preserve customs, and foster creativity in religious culture.
