װען אַ לײבּ שרײַט װער זאָל זיך ניט פאָרכטן? דער װאָרט ארי״ה בּאטײַט (די אל״ף מאכט) אֶלוּל, (די רי״ש מאכט) רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, (די יו״ד מאכט) יוֹם כִּפּוּר, (די ה״א מאכט) הוֹשַׁעֲנָא רַבָּה, דאָס הײסט װען עס קומען די דאָזיגע הײליגע און פאָרכטיגע טעג, װער זאָל זיך ניט פאָרכטן?

The word “lion” signifies the letter “alef ” in the word Elul. The “resh” stands for Rosh ha-Shanah. The “yud” stands for Yom Kippur. The “heh” stands for Hoshanah Rabbah. When these Days of Awe come, who is not afraid?

Master of the Cosmos, now we come to bless and hallow the month of Elul with great awe and trembling. The time approaches when you will sit on your throne to judge the world. This is why we now tremble and our hearts flow like water. I (plonit daughter of plonit) your servant, am anxious to do everything I can. I am earth and ashes and I come to awaken your great mercy, that you should bestow loving kindness upon me and all Jews in this month of Elul which I am now blessing. Open the doors of repentance for me, the doors of prayer, that all my sins be forgiven, and write me in the Book of Life this coming Rosh Hashana. Bless and make successful all my paths, especially the work of my hands, and give me a good and pure heart that I should understand how foolish I was when I abandoned your Torah, which leads to the path of life. Let me be truly contrite about my bad deeds. Let me resolve to no longer sin and arouse your anger. Open the doors of sustenance, of favor and kindness for me in your eyes and in the eyes of all who see me. You are close to all who call upon you. You are found by all who seek you. Answer me so that the month of Elul, which I am sanctifying now, should be blessed with your full blessing. Amen.

Dear God, I trust in your many mercies, and I depend on your kindness. I come to bless the month of Elul, during which you will look at my bad deeds. For such is the meaning of the word Elul: “Woe is to me and woe is to my soul.”[4] Cf. Beit Aharon, and מעשיות שונות, מעשה בחסיד אחד שהיה לו בן אחד ושמו ר’ יוחנן But when I look into my heart and truly repent my sins, you, dear God, will turn your mercy on me. The name of the month Elul will then show, “I turn towards my beloved and my beloved turns to me.”[5] Song of Songs 7:10 You will turn to my pleas and forgive my transgressions. Dear God, look down from your heavenly abode and see my bitter heart as I come before you to plead. Cleanse my sins, create in me a pure and clean heart, that I should turn from the bad path and transgress no more. Let me hold dear your Holy Torah and mitsvot all the days of my life. Amen.

Master of the Cosmos, I am very afraid of your ruling on the Day of Judgment that is coming, therefore I do everything I can with my prayer. Almighty God, have mercy upon me, don’t pour out your wrath upon me, and turn your heart and your ears to accept my repentance and prayer. Bless the month of Elul so that our hearts be awakened to do good. Let the month mean “Fortunate are you and fortunate is your soul.” Let us merit to be written and sealed to your blessed New Year for life and health and for an honorable livelihood. Blessed is the One who hears the prayers of their people Yisra’el with mercy. Listen to the pleas of (plonit daughter of plonit) and the pleas of my husband and my children. Have mercy upon us and upon all Yisra’el, amen and amen. So it should be favorable.
