Compassionate father who chose Yisra’el for their people, we come now to bless and sanctify the month of Iyyar. In this month we began to be your beloved nation, and you gave us the cherished holy Shabbat. Remember the merit of the holy Shabbat, and through the merit which you gave us women, the commandments of blessing and kindling the Shabbat lights, may our fortune be uplifted. Save us from all sickness that can come to pass in the month as the order of nature changes, for the winter passes and summer comes. Send us [your] healing, as it says in the Torah, “I am YHVH, your healer.”[1] Exodus 15:26 partial Amen.

Master of the Cosmos, we come now to bless the month of Iyyar. This is the time of year when you took the Jews out of Mitsrayim. In the month of Iyyar you started sending down the manna from heaven in the merit of Moshe our teacher. In the merit of Miriam the prophet, a well of water, which was created in the six days of Creation, on Friday at twilight, accompanied the Jews in the wilderness (in the form of a [water-gushing] stone[2] Tosefta Sukkah 3:11-13. Cf. Ginzberg, Legends of the Jews 6:21, note 129. ) from the month of Iyyar onward. Remember us now, beloved God, in her merit, for she sang with the women when the Jews went out of the Sea of Reeds, as it states, “Miriam the prophet, the sister of Aharon, took the drum in her hand, and all the women went out after her with drums and instruments, and Miriam sang, ‘Sing to the beloved YHVH, for (haShem) has done great miracles; the horse and the rider (haShem) has cast into the depths of the sea.’”[3] Exodus 15:20-21 So should we merit to sing with all the righteous women and righteous men when Moshiaḥ comes. Free us from all trouble, speedily in our days. Amen.

Wake up, Miriam the prophet, wake up from your rest and stand in front of the King of all kings, the blessed Holy one, and beg them to take pity on us in this month of Iyyar, that we should have sustenance the way Hashem (may they be blessed), sustained the Jews with manna in the merit of your brother Moshe, and with the well in your merit; that we should not become poverty-stricken; that we should be cleansed in this month, as when the Jews went into the wilderness to receive the Torah. “Save your people, YHVH, and bless your inheritance;”[4] Psalms 28:9 raise up their fortune and have mercy upon them, as a father has mercy upon their children, and bless us this month of Iyyar for life and health, fortune and blessing. Amen.

To the best of my ability, this is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָה לְשַׁבָּת מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חוֺדֶשׁ אִיָיר (“Tkhine for Shabbat Mevorkhim Rosh Ḥodesh Iyyar”) which appeared in תחנות מקרא קודש (Teḥinot Miqra Ḳodesh, Widow and Brothers Romm, Vilna 1877) before its adaptation in Shas Tkhine Ḥadashe (Ben-Tsiyon Alfes 1910), the source from which this translation was made. English translation adapted slightly from Techinas: A Voice from the Heart “As Only A Woman Can Pray” by Rivka Zakutinsky (Aura Press, 1992). –A.N. Varady
