Excerpt: The Italian rite, unique among Jewish rites, has preserved up until very recently the custom recorded in the Talmud, Masekhet Tagnanith, for communally declared fast days. In this rite, sometimes referred to as the Twenty-Four Blessings, six more blessings are added to the liturgy — the Zikhronot and Shofrot portions more commonly recited on Rosh haShanah, and four different psalms, all interspaced with a poetic litany on behalf of the ancestors' merit and shofar blasts. Note: this new English translation translates the Divine Name as “Domedet,” the traditional term used as a Judeo-Italian translation of the Tetragrammaton. Of uncertain origin, it may be a derivation of the Latin “Dominus Deus” meaning “the LORD God.”

When we wish to pray a communal fast, we go to the synagogue and pray the service of prayer as in eveyr day of the week. In the past, some had the custom to sing the poem El Gissraél Nicreta before Gnesrat Aboténu as was sung on the Day of Atonement, but these days the community neither sings it on communal fasts nor on the Day of Atonement. After the private prayer of the Gnamida the cantor recites his prayer aloud according to this order.
Blessed are You, Domedet, our God and God of our ancestors. God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob. God, great, awesome, and terrific, Highest Deity, who does good kindness, and created everything, and remembers the kindness of ancestors, and brings a redeemer to their descendants, for the Name’s sake, in love. Sovereign, Help and Rescue and Shield.

A crown they give to You — the multitudes above with the crowds below. Together they all render Your holiness threefold, just as was said by Your prophet’s hand — And one called to another and said: Holy, Holy, Holy is Domedet of Multitudes! The whole earth is full of Divine glory. To each other they bless, saying: Blessed is the glory of Domedet from its place! And in Your holy word it is written saying: Domedet will reign forever, your God, Zion, from generation to generation, hal’luyah! From generation to generation we acclaim the sovereignty of God, who alone is high and holy. And Your praises, our God, will never depart from our lips ever and ever. For a God, Sovereign, Great, and Holy are You.

You You remember earthly matters and account all those crafted of old. Before You is revealed all hidden things, and hordes of secrets simce from creation. For nothing is forgotten before Your Throne of glory, and nothing is secreted from Your sight. You remember all that is done and nothing that is crafted can be concealed from You. All is revealed and known before You, Domedet our God, who watches and looks until the last generations. For You bring a law of remembrance for all that has breath to be accounted, to recall numerous actions and endless hordes of creatures. Since the beginning You have made this known, and since the earlier time You have revealed it. For those who see You will never stumble, nor will those who trust in You ever be destroyed. For the recollection of all deeds comes before you, and You seek out the deeds of everyone. And also in love You remembered Noah, and accounted for him with words of rescue and mercy, when you brought the waters of the Deluge to destroy all flesh on account of their evil deeds. Thus his remembrance came before Domedet our God, to increase his seed like the dust of the dry land and his descendants like the sand of the sea.

As is said in Your Torah: And God remembered Noah and all the animals and beasts that were with him in the ark, and God passed a wind over the land and the waters subsided.[3] Genesis 8:1  And it is written: And God heard their cries and God remembered the covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.[4] Exodus 2:24  And it is written: And I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham I will remember, and the land I will remember.[5] Leviticus 26:42

And in Your holy Word it is written, saying: A memorial God made for Divine wonders; gracious and merciful is Domedet.[6] Psalms 111:4  And it is written: God gave meat to those in awe; remembring the covenant forever.[7] Psalms 111:5  And it is written: Remembering the covenant forever, giving commandments to a thousand generations.[8] Psalms 106:45

And by the hands of Your servants the prophets it is said: Go out and call in the ears of Jerusalem to say: Thus says Domedet: I remember you in your youthful kindness, your bridal love; as you came after me in the desert, in a land unsown.[9] Jeremiah 2:2  And it is written: And I, I will remember My covenant with you in your youthful days, and I will establish with you an eternal covenant.[10] Ezekiel 16:60  And it is written: Isn’t Ephraim a treasured son to me, a dandled child? For whenI spoke against him, I would remember, remember him still; thus My innards long for him; I will have compassion, compassion, declares Domedet.[11] Jeremiah 31:21

Our God and God of our ancestors, remember us with a good memory before us, and account for us with an accounting of rescue and mercy from the highest ancient heavens. And remember for us, Domedet our God, the covenant and the kindness and the vow that You voved to Abraham our father on Mt. Moriah. And may the Binding, when Abraham our father bound Isaac his son upon the back of the altar and suppressed his mercy to do Your will wholeheartedly, be shown before You. Thus may Your mercy suppress Your rage from upon us, and in Your great goodness withdraw Your fiery anger from Your people and from Your city and from Your land and from Your inheritance. And fulfill for us, Domedet our God, the word that You promised to us in Your Torah by the hands of Moses Your servant from Your Holy Mouth as said: And I will remember for them the covenant of the first ones whom I brought out from the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations to be God for them, I am Domedet.[12] Leviticus 26:45  For You remember all forgotten things since eternity, and none can forget before Your glorious throne, and You will remember the binding of Isaac on this day for his seed in mercy.

You were revealed in Your glorious cloud to Your holy people to speak to them. From heaven they heard Your sound and You were revealed to them in cumuli of purity. Also the whole entire world quaked before You, and the creatures of creation trembled at You, when You were revealed, our Sovereign, upon Mt. Sinai, to teach Your people Torah and commandments. And You made them hear the splendor of Your sound and Your holy words from conflagrations of fire. In thunder and lightning You were revealed over them, and in the sound of the shofar You were made known to them.
As is said in Your Torah: And it was on the third day in the morning, and there was thunder and lightning and cloud was heavy over the moutnain, and the sound of the shofar was very strong, and all the people who were in the camp trembled.[13] Exodus 19:16  And it is written: And the sound of the shofar got stronger and stronger, Moses would speak and God would answer in thunder.[14] Exodus 19:19  And it is written: And all the people were seeing the thunder and the flame and the sound of the shofar and the mountain asmoke, and the people feared and quaked and stood afar.[15] Exodus 20:15 (some texts say 20:18, it’s a whole thing)
And in Your holy Word it is written, saying: God ascends with blast, Domedet with the shofar sound.[16] Psalms 47:6  And it is written: With trumpets and the shofar sound, blast before the Sovereign Domedet.[17] Psalms 98:6  And it is written: Blow the shofar on the new moon, on the covered-day of the day of our festival. For it is a law for Israel, a ruling of the God of Jacob.[18] Psalms 81:4-5  And it is written: Hallelujah. Praise God in holiness, praise the One in the firmaments of power. Praise the One in God’s strength, praise the One as per Divine greatness. Praise the One with the shofar blast, praise the One with harp and lyre. Praise the One with drum and dance, praise the One with pipe and flute. Praise the One with sounding cymbals, praise the One with blasting cymbals. All breath should praise Yah, hallelujah![19] Psalms 150

And by the hands of Your servants the prophets it is said: All earth-dwellers and inhabitants of the land, when a flag is lifted in the mountains, take note; when the shofar is blown, listen![20] Isaiah 18:3  And it is written: And on that day the great shofar will be blown, and those lost in the land of Assyria and scattered in the land of Egypt will come and bow before Domedet on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.[21] Isaiah 27:13  And it is written: And Domedet will be seen among them, and God’s arrow will go out like lighting, and the Master Domedet by the sound of the shofar will go out in the south wind. Domedet of Multitudes will guard them.[22] Zechariah 9:14-15  So too You will defend Your people Israel with Your peace.

For with You is forgiveness so You may be awed. I trust Domedet, my soul truss, and for the Divine word I wait. My soul is for the Master like the morning-watchers watch the morning. A song of the poor man who is faint and before Domedet spills out his word. Domedet, hear my prayer, and let my please come to You. Don’t turn Your face from me, on the day I am stressed turn Your uear to me, on the day I call quickly answer me. For vanished like smoke are my days, and my bones like a fireplace are charred. Strickened like glass and dried is my heart, as I have forgotten eating bread. From the voice of my groan my bones stick to my flesh. I am like a desert-owl, an owl in the ruins. I lie awake, like a bird alone on the roof. All day my enemies curse me, my deriders swear at me. For I eat ash like bread, and mix my drink with tears. From Your rage and anger, for You have taken and cast me away. My days are like a long shadow, I dry up like grass. But You, Domedet, sit forever; Your remembrance is to every generation. You will rise and have mercy on Zion, for it is time to grace it, the time has come! For Your servants desire its stones, and love its dust. Let nations fear the name of Domedet, and all the earth’s rulers Your glory. For Domedet builds Zion, appearing in glory. God turned to the prayer of the stripped ones, not spurning their prayer. Let it be written to the final generation, so the people to be created will praise Yah. For God looks down from the holy heights, Domedet from heaven looks to earth, to hear the groan of the prisoner, to open the death-facing, to tell in Zion the name of Domedet, and divine praise in Jerusalem, when the peoples gather together and the regimes to serve Domedet. My[28] Written: “His”  strength was afflicted along the way, my days were shortened. I would say, My God, do not take me up halfway through my days — for all generations are Your years! Once You founded the earth, Your handiwork is the heavens. They will perish, but You will stand; and all will wear out like a garment, like clothing You pass them and they pass. But You are the same, and Your years never end. The children of Your servants will dwell, and their seed before You will be established.[29] Psalms 102

Domedet shine the Divine Face upon you and grace you. Domedet lift the Divine Face to you and set for you peace.[30] Numbers 6:24-26
Set peace, goodness, and blessing, grace and kindness and compassion upon us and upon all Israel Your people. Bless us, our Parent, all as one in the light of Your Face, for in the light of Your Face You have given us, Domedet our God, a Torah of life, love and kindness, righteousness, blessing, rescue, compassion, and life, and peace, and good it would be in Your eyes to bless all Your people Israqel always at every time and every hour in Your peace.

Bring close
Your righteousness to the detoured and exiled one
and turn from it plague and sickness.
Just as You answered
Ezra in exile,
Answer us
and crown us with peace and greatness.

Blessed are You, Domedet, who blesses the people Israel with peace.
We may extend, as per the volition of the cantor, the text of Avinu Malkenu,
then perform Taḥanun, and say:
Those who are first to prayer
must not be shut out in prayer,
Lest they regret that they did prayer!
Those who loudly scream,
juctice is their dream.
Their very eyes cannot cease from their scream!
Those who call from the deep
groan and weep.
Please do not turn them back with nothing to keep!
Those who desire You in tears,
pained, shedding tears.
Guardian of the gates of tears.
Those who awake for petitions,
and whisper nightly contritions.
Save and rescue them from all decreed perditions!
The scattered flock recall,
synagogue and study-hall,
to sprout up like grass our dry bones where they fall!
The ruined House of Prayer,
mocking the Entirely Fair,
In your zealous zeal, account for those who ensnare!
Those without joy or smile
scattered in exile,
gather them like a flock in the sheepfold fold Bozrah-style!
After which, if desired, one says sitting:
Hey, like clay in the hand of the potter,
who can, by volition, widen or narrow it,
so too are we in Your hand, Guardian of Kindness.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like stone in the hand of the mason,
who can, by volition, strengthen or cut it,
so too are we in Your hand, Source of Life and Death.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like an axe in the hand of the harvester,
who can, by volition, split with it or lay it down,
so too are we in Your hand, Supporter of the wretched poor.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like a helm in the hand of a sailor,
who can, by volition, grip it or let it loose,
so too we are in Your hand, Good and Forgiving.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like glass in the hand of the glazier,
who can, by volition, spread or sqeeze it,
so too we are in Your hand, pardoning sin and error.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like mortar in the hand of the bricklayer,
who can, by volition, crush or build it,
so too we are in Your hand, to ease and cleansed.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like a salon in the hand of its user,
who can, by volition, stand or leave it,
so too are we in Your hand, the poor’s Stronghold and Refuge.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like canvas in the hand of the embroiderer,
who can, by volition, straighten or crimp it,
so too are we in Your hand, Zealous and Avenging God.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
Hey, like silver in the hand of the smith,
who can, by volition, alloy or purify it,
so too are we in Your hand to be cleansed and purified.
Behold the covenant and don’t heed the Impulse!
