Excerpt: In Jewish liturgy, some passages are dəvarim she-bi-qdushah, passages that require public communal prayer. Most famous among these are the Qaddish, Barkhu, and Qədushah. But people are not always able to pray in a community! In liturgical history both ancient and modern many different tashlumim (replacements) for these texts when praying individually have been suggested. The following is the Barkhu for an individual from Seder Rav ȝAmram, the oldest known full siddur. Much of the content is from the hekhalot literature or the Gemara, often demonstrating girsaot not otherwise known. . . .
Note: “The CAUSE” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.” This translation also uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.

The Cause will reign for eternity and aye!’ (Exodus 15:18) And all the troops on high respond after it until it reaches the Barkhu. When it reaches the Barkhu, a beast-angel is there named Israel, on whose forehead is inscribed Israel, about whom Ezekiel said: ‘The beast that I saw under the God of Israel‘ (Ezekiel 10:20), and about which David said: ‘And They rode on a mount-angel and flew, and glided on the wind’s wings’ (Psalms 18:11). And it raises the Throne and stands in the midst of the firmament and says aloud: ‘Bless the blessed Cause!’ and all the troops on high respond after it ‘Blessed be the blessed Cause for eternity and aye!’ Before the word even leaves their mouths, holy snake-angels shake the universe and say in a great loud voice: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Cause of Multitudes! All the earth is full of Their glory!’ (Isaiah 6:3) Before the word even leaves their mouths, the wheel-angels roll and quake and make all the universe quake and say: ‘Blessed be the Cause’s glory from its place!’ (Ezekiel 3:12) And that same beast-angel [remains] until all the prince-angels on high and all the captains and all the troops and all the camps and all the families on high say to that one beast whose name is Israel: ‘Hear, Israel! Thus you learn how great is the power of the Barkhu,
which is from the regiments on high, for even the messenger-angels use it and bless their Creator! Come and see how cherished before the blessed Holy One is it when Israel says “Holy” before Them, for They warned the chariot-descenders to teach us about that matter, that “Holy” is said before Them, and we are to be warned to do pride to our Maker and raise before Them a sweet smell.
