גרויסער גאָט, דײַנע װאונדער און דײַן הַשְׁגָחַה אויף דײַנע באשעפענעס איז ניט אויסצודערצײלן, װי דער קינד דארף ארויסגײן אויף אײגענע קעסט (ענטװאנען פון מוטער׳ס ברוסט) גרײטסטו אים צײנער צו מאָלן זײַן שפײַז. איך דאנק און לויב דײַן ליבן נאָמען פאר דעם טײַערן פּרעזענט, די כָּשֶׁר׳ע מְצִיאָה, דעם פּערעלע װאָס איך האָב געפונען בײַ מײַן קינד אין מײַלעלע, און איך בעט דײַן רַחֲמָנוּת דו זאָלסט ניט אָפּטאן דײַן חֶסֶד אויף װײַטער, און העלפן עס זאָל זיך גרינג אויסשנײַדן די איבעריגע צײנדלאך ביז דעם לעצטן, ער זאָל קענען טאָן דײַן רָצוֺן, עסן און קלײַבן גראפטן צו גײן אין חדר לערנען דײַן הײליגע תּוֺרָה. איך בעט דיר גאָט, שטארק זײַן הארץ און העלף אונז מיר זאָלן אים אפּהיטן ער זאָל חָלִילָה מיט די צײנער ניט עסן קײן מַאֲכָלוֺת אֲסוּרוֺת, נאָר ער זאָל זײַן גוט און פרום, גאָט און מענטשן זאלן מיט אים פרײען, אמן.

Your wonders and hashgohcho over all creatures are so great and numerous they cannot be recounted. When a child begins to be weaned, You give him teeth with which to chew food. For the precious gift, for the little pearl I have found in my child’s mouth, I thank You and praise Your beloved Name. May the remainder of his teeth cut through easily so that he will be able to do Your will, to eat and gather strength with which to go to ḥeder and study Your holy Torah. Strengthen him in his resolve and help us guard him so that with these teeth he will not eat forbidden foods. May he become a good and pious person, enabling both You and men to rejoice in him. Amen.

This is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָּה מִגְדַּל הַשֵּׁן (“Tkhine for a Baby’s First Tooth”) which first appeared in ש״ס תחנה חדשה (Shas Tkhine Ḥadasha), a collection of tkhines published by Ben-Zion Alfes in Vilna, 1922. Norman Tarnor notes that the title “Migdal Shen” (Tower of Ivory) is a reference to Shir haShirim 7:5.
