Excerpt: A liturgy for counting the fifty days of consolation or comfort between Tishah b'Av and Rosh haShanah (non-inclusive), in the style of the liturgy for the omer. . . .
Note: “The CAUSE” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.” “Deity” is used to translate the divine name El. “God” is used to translate the divine name Elohim. This translation also uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.

Here I am, ready and willing
to count the count of comfort. In the days to come and the weeks to come, with the blessed Name’s help, we will rise and expand and ascend and soar and increase and arise and be lifted from suffering to forgiveness from shame to atonement from sorrow to righteousness from sorrow to repentance from embarrassment to blessing from destruction to a good year from pain to pardon[1] The Hebrew here is a double acrostic that spells “written name” |
Yah!
Justify us, grace us, sanctify us, guide us have mercy on us, strengthen us, teach us![2] An acrostic that spells “Yitsḥaq Har’el” Deity, sovereign, comfort us[3] An acrostic that spells “Amen” – for You are a Deity gracious and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in kindness, who comforts over evil. (Jonah 4:2) |
And may the Cause our God’s sweetness be upon us,
and our handiwork established over us; may They establish our handiwork! (Psalms 90:17) |
|
Instead of the seven sefirot used to arrange the omer,
the days are arranged according to the seven haftarot of consolation, named according to one of the first prominent words in the targum for each haftarah: Comforts = Isaiah 40:1 (Va-etḥanan). Ẓion = Isaiah 49:14 (‘Eqev) Darkened = Isaiah 54:11 (Re’eh) I-I = Isaiah 51:12 (Shofṭim) Barren = Isaiah 54:1 (Ki Tetse) Shine = Isaiah 60:1 (Ki Tavo) Joy = Isaiah 61:10 (Nitsavim) The count is in Aramaic, rather than in Hebrew, to reflect the fact this is not a mitsvah. |

Make for me a good sign, so my enemies will see and be ashamed, for You, Cause, helped me and comforted me. (Psalms 86:17) |
And in the words of the prophet of Your condolences it is written, saying:
And you will say on that day: I thank You, Cause, though You were angry at me, You turn back Your anger and comfort me. (Isaiah 12:1) |
And it is said:
For the Cause comforts Ẓion, comforts all its ruins, and sets its wilds like Eden, and its desert like the Cause’s garden; joy and happiness will be found there, thanksgiving and the sound of song. (Isaiah 51:3) |
And it is said:
Like a man whose mother comforts him, so I will comfort you, and in Jerusalem you will be comforted. (Isaiah 66:13) |
And all these he said so as to fulfill what is said:
Comfort, comfort my people! — says your God. (Isaiah 40:1) |
