Content:
Based on one of my favorite aggadot where Turnus Rufus complains to Rebbi Aḳiva that circumcision is modifying our body from “the way God made it” and Rebbi Aḳiva holds out a loaf of bread and a sheaf of wheat and asks him which one he’d rather eat (find Midrash Tanḥumah Tazria 5.1).

Note: This translation uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.

In the name of unifying
HE that is holy and blessed
and SHE that is present,
in awe and in love,
in love and in awe,
to unify the first two and last two letters of the Name
that THEY be unified completely,
in the name of all God-strugglers,
here I am ready and willing
to join in the works (pl.) of creation,
in the image of the Source of creation, Creator of all creators.
May the MAKER of wheat-sheaves
that we may merit to bake cakes
support me and help me in this process,
in whose name I was created,
as it is written:
“And God created the human in THEIR (sg.) image,
in the image of God created it,
male and female created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
May the Master our God be pleasant upon us,
and the works of our hands established for us;
may THEY establish the works of our hands! (Psalms 90:17)
