Abraham Cronbach

Abraham Cronbach (February 15, 1882 – April 2, 1965) was a Reform movement rabbi in the United States, a teacher, and a leader and activist for Jewish pacifism. He served as a rabbi for congregations in Indiana, Ohio, and New York. Cronbach was one of the founders of the Peace Heroes Memorial Society and a co-founder of the Jewish Peace Fellowship.

[Prayer for] Our Contemners, by Rabbi Abraham Cronbach (1924)

Contributed by: Abraham Cronbach, Aharon N. Varady (transcription)

Titled “Our Contemners,” this prayer from Rabbi Abraham Cronbach is the second in his collection of prayer, Prayers of the Jewish Advance (1924), on pages 8 through 11.

Our Enemies, an exhortation to look inward to resolve conflict (CCAR 1923)

Contributed by: Aharon N. Varady (transcription), Abraham Cronbach, Central Conference of American Rabbis [CCAR]

“Our Enemies” is the thirty-first prayer found in ברכה ותהלה Blessing and Praise: A Book of Meditations and Prayers for Individual and Home Devotion (CCAR 1923), pp. 105-107. Unfortunately, we do not yet know of a resource providing clear attribution of authorship for any of the prayers in this volume. However, the pacifist language and argument in this prayer strongly identifies it as having been written by Rabbi Abraham Cronbach.
