This is a collection of anthologies of hymns in the vernacular intended for public singing in the Synagogue by congregants or choirs. The hymns in these collections include original works by Jewish poets, rhymed verse adapted from earlier piyyutim, and Jewish adaptations and abridgements of hymns originally written for non-Jewish use. While the custom of hymn singing has waned in Jewish contexts, the genre of Jewish hymn books was largely replaced with songbooks or "songsters" used in informal contexts, or increasingly included as table-songs within birkonim (bentshers).
