This is a collection of seder teḥinot -- arrangements of vernacular supplicatory and paraliturgical prayers intended for private devotional use outside and supplementary to prayers offered publicly in the synagogue.
Alice Lucas’s Songs of Zion by Hebrew Singers of Mediæval Times (1894) is a collection of twenty-five adapted English translations, mainly of piyyutim, all intended “for devotion,” i.e., prayer. The collection was expanded upon in a follow-up publication of Lucas, The Jewish Year (1898).
Prayers for Jewish Working Girls (1895) is a collection of prayers in vernacular English by Lilian Helen Montagu (1873-1963). The prayerbook was dedicated to the members of the West Central Girls’ Club, founded in 1893 by Lilian and co-led by her and her sister Marian Montagu.
Alice Lucas’s The Jewish Year: A Collection of Devotional Poems for Sabbaths and Holidays throughout the Year (1898) is a collection of 75 adapted English translations of piyyutim (including 12 original works by Lucas) intended “for devotion,” i.e., prayer. The collection expanded on an earlier publication of Lucas, Songs of Zion (1894). This work contains all but three of the works published in Songs of Zion.
Meditation of the Heart: A Book of Private Devotion for Young and Old (1900) is a collection of teḥinot in English, selected, arranged, and written by Annie Josephine Levi. The introduction was written by the Rabbi Gustav Gottheil. We know very little else about Levi save that she contributed short stories, poems, and essays to periodicals and was active from 1895-1905.
