Rosh Ḥodesh Tishrei (תִּשְׁרֵי)

This is an archive of prayers and songs written for, or relevant to, רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ תִּשְׁרֵי Rosh Ḥodesh Tishrei, the seventh month in the Jewish calendar. The number seven holds special ancient and somewhat obscure significance in Jewish tradition, with other calendrical days being so marked: Shabbat (the 7th day of the week), Shavuot (the completion of seven weeks), Shemitah (the sabbatical seventh year for the Earth), Yovel (the completion of seven shemitah cycles), and the length of days for the equinoctial Passover and Sukkot harvest festivals in Erets Yisrael. Seven holds angelological significance in ancient Judaism: seven is the count of the Divine entourage. In ancient astronomical observations, seven also represented the visible heavenly bodies (the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn). Cosmologically, seven can also represent the center and six outward cardinal directions (north, south, east, west, up, down).

Tishrei is widely referred to as "the first month" (and appears so in many Jewish calendars) given that its Rosh Ḥodesh coincides with Rosh ha-Shanah, the New Year's Day festival for all of creation. (In comparison, on Rosh Ḥodesh Nissan -- the actual first month of the Jewish year -- the New Year's Day for Kings and Queens receives far less attention.)

In the Southern Hemisphere of planet Earth, Tishrei marks the beginning of the Spring season. Rosh Ḥodesh Tishrei also coincides with Rosh Hashanah (l'Maaseh Bereshit), the New Year's Day for all of Creation -- marking a mythopoetic beginning for the entire Cosmos in our earthly calendar.

בִּרְכַּת הָאִילָנוֹת | The Blessing of Flowering Fruit Trees in the Spring Season in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres

When the spring (Aviv) season arrives, a blessing is traditionally said when one is in view of at least two flowering fruit trees. In the northern hemisphere, it can be said anytime through the end of the month of Nissan (though it can still be said in Iyar). For those who live in the southern hemisphere, the blessing can be said during the month of Tishrei.
