We pray thee, O [El YHVH],
who hast created the heavens, and hast stretched them forth;
who hast spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it;
who hast given breath unto the people upon it,
and spirit to them that walk therein.
Thou didst establish the borders of the earth,
and kingdoms and principalities thereon hast thou erected;
the government of the United States hath thy hand ordained;
small were its beginnings, but in the abundance of thy lovingkindness
it hath grown great like unto a cedar of Lebanon;
and from generation unto generation,
it increaseth in strength, in wealth, and in might;
the stretching forth of its wings encompasseth a continent from sea to sea;
and its dominion is over distant isles and lands.
As the sun in his might,
it shineth forth unto the world and all the peoples
with the lustre of its Laws of right and justice;
and righteously ordain its law-givers, and virtuously its judges.
Before the bar of justice, all men are deemed alike;
and wealth and poverty make no distinction;
and all created in thine image dwell within its borders in amity like brothers.
Also thy nation, the house of Israel,
pursued from age to age by storm and tempest;
envy of nations, and the peoples’ hate;
ever despoiled without restraint;
thy bruised dove, [Elyon], hath found within this country rest;
a nest where to abide, a tent to shelter it.
On the broad bosom of this mighty land,
thy suffering children have at last found rest.
And now, O [YHVH Elohim], mayest thou be willing,
and bless this country and all its inhabitants
with the abundance of thy blessings,
with the dew of the heavens, and the fat of the earth;

and from the treasures of the happiness which is from thee,
pour forth upon this land blessings without end.
Let no more violence be heard in this land,
nor desolation and destruction within its borders;
and thou shalt call its walls salvation, and its gates praise.
Remove thou from its inhabitants all disease and misfortune,
all hinderness and mishap.
And no enemy shall do them violence,
but his sword shall be as dust before them,
and as the driven stubble his bow.
Spread thou over this country the pavilion of thy peace,
and may thy glory rest upon it for all time.
Amen.
Our Father in Heaven,
bless the President of these United States,
WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT,
and the Vice President,
JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT SHERMAN,
and the Congress,
and the Supreme Court.
Strengthen their hands [to] effect the works of peace,
and righteousness,
and justice;
and to establish the welfare of all the inhabitants of this Country,
and to cause to flourish righteousness and praise within this land.
Great shall be their honor through thy salvation,
and with thy strength they will rejoice greatly.
Amen.
Shower thy blessings also upon the Governor,
and the Lieutenant-Governor of this state,
and upon the Mayor and Government of this city.
Help them in their doubts and perplexities;
make clear to them the paths wherein they shall walk,
that they may serve the people in righteousness,
and render to all justice.
And all shall delight themselves in exceeding peace.
Amen.
Send thy salvation to the city of (Mention the name)
and to all its inhabitants.
Spread upon them the pavilion of thy peace;
and they shall receive joy and happiness,
and sighs and sorrows shall depart.
Amen.

Among the various versions of the Siddur Tifereth Jehudah published by the Hebrew Publishing Company in 1912 and 1916, the prayer for the government found in one edition of the Ashkenaz siddur from 1912 contains what appears to be the unabridged form of the prayer with a corresponding English translation. (For the shorter version, find it here.) Many thanks to Rabbi Dr. Seth (Avi) Kadish for having this edition of the Siddur Tifereth Jehudah scanned and to Alan Belsky for transcribing this prayer in its entirety. I have done my best to set the English translation side-by-side with the Hebrew text of the prayer in a linear style. I have re-Hebraized invocations of divine names in the translation in brackets. –Aharon Varady
