Shiv’ah Asar b’Tamuz

This is an archive of prayers selected for Shiv'ah Asar b'Tamuz שִׁבְעָה עָשָׂר בְּתַמּוּז‎, the 17th day in the month of Tamuz in the Jewish calendar. The day commemorates the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple, among other calamities. The day also marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tishah b'Av.

שְׁעֵה נֶאֱסַר | Sh’eh Ne’esar — a pizmon seliḥah for 17 Tammuz by Shlomo ibn Gabirol (ca. 1050)

A seliḥah for 17 Tammuz by the great payṭan and philosopher Shlomo ibn Gabirol. This seliḥa is referred to as pizmon, meaning that (in the Ashkenazi rite) each stanza is recited aloud by the congregation followed by the shaliaḥ tzibbur. This piyyuṭ, in Ashkenazi practice, serves as the final unique seliḥa of the 17 Tammuz seliḥot. (There are other piyyutim recited as part of fast day seliḥot but they aren’t unique to 17 Tammuz.)

אֱלֹהֵי יְשׁוּעָתֵֽנוּ | Elohei Yeshuaténu, a pizmon for 17 Tammuz attributed to the legendary Jewish Pope Andreas (translation by Isaac Gantwerk Mayer)

A pizmon (a seliḥah with a refrain, to be recited aloud) recited in the Sephardic rite for the seventeenth of Tammuz, Elohei Yeshuatenu, like most seliḥot for that day, features stanzas for each of the five tragedies that occurred on the day. But what’s unique about it is the legend of its author. This piyyuṭ is signed with the name Andreas, the signature of the legendary Jewish Pope Andreas, whose popular story can be found throughout the Jewish world.
