Our elo’ah in Heaven,
creator of all flesh and marvelous things,[1] Judges 13:19.
don’t be still,
don’t be silent,
don’t be unconcerned, El.
For a villain has arisen in the land of Togarmah,[2] Cf. Genesis 10:3. i.e., Turkey.
Saying of another land:
“Up! Let us rise up against her for battle.”[3] Obadiah 1:1 part.
And of the remnant of the Kurdish people, said:
“I will make you least among nations, you shall be most despised.”[4] Obadiah 1:2.
And as you commanded in your holy scripture, saying:
“Do not profit by the blood of your fellow: I am YHVH.”[5] Leviticus 19:16 part
Say to the Destroyer: “Cease!”
Therefore, let it not be said of us:
“For the outrage to your brother…
Disgrace shall engulf you, and you shall perish forever.
On that day when you stood aloof,
when aliens carried off his goods,
when foreigners entered his gates…”[6] Obadiah 1:10.
“How could you gaze in glee with the others on its misfortune…”[7] Obadiah 1:13 part.
“How could you stand at the passes to cut down its fugitives!
How could you betray those who fled on that day of anguish!”[8] Obadiah 1:14.
Please, God, spirit of all flesh,
With your great strength —
Stop the massacre and the atrocities committed upon our neighbors
And bring peace to the Earth and a joyous world to all its inhabitants.
And fulfill for them what is written in Scripture:
“The warrior’s bow shall be banished.
He shall call on the nations to surrender,”[9] Zekharyah 9:10.
“Thus He will judge among the nations
and arbitrate for the many peoples,
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks:
Nation shall not take up sword against nation;
they shall never again know war.”[10] Isaiah 2:4.
And fulfill for the refugees of the destruction in the northern land the word of the prophet:
“They shall rebuild ruined cities and inhabit them…
they shall till gardens and eat their fruits…
nevermore to be uprooted from their fertile-earth.”[11] Amos 9:14-15.
and let us say, amen.
