Betrachtungen für die zehn Bußtage | Reflections for the Ten Days of Penance, a teḥinah by Yehoshua Heshil Miro (1829)

“Betrachtungen für die zehn Bußtage” was translated/adapted by Yehoshua Heshil Miro and published in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaicher Religion. It first appears in the 1829 edition, תחנות Teḥinot ein Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauenzimmer mosaicher Religion as teḥinah №42 on pp. 53-56. In the 1835 edition, it appears as teḥinah №41 pp. 64-68. In the 1842 edition, it appears as teḥinah №43 on pp. 67-71. . . .

“Avinu Malkeinu,” dvar tefillah by Rabbi David Seidenberg (neohasid·org)

The words of Avinu Malkeinu are a little different from the standard translation. It doesn’t say in Hebrew, “we have no good deeds” (ein lanu ma’asim tovim), but rather, “there are no deeds in us” (ein banu ma’asim). The p’shat (literal meaning) implies that whatever we have done in the past does not have to live inside of us — we can release our deeds and be released from them, fully, to start over, like a newborn, to become whoever we need to become. . . .
